Reader Email – transitioning from private sector to public interest

Thanks to an email from a blog reader, I have decided to create a new section where other readers can join me in responding to a few emails each week. (I will continue to respond privately to other emails.) While I am by no means an expert in the field, I am always happy to share what I have learned from my experiences.

Reader email:

Let me start off by saying a big THANK YOU for this site. It is perfectly tailored for people like me trying to get into public interest/ policy work. I have a legal background and I am currently practicing in Nairobi in the private sector. Working at law firms not only gave me a strong foundation in law and enabled me to network, it really did give me the bigger picture on how a legal ecosystem works and the skills required.

You said you created this site following your own frustrations finding a job. My frustration is that I’ve been working and tweaking on my applications in the hopes that my transferable skills will come out as I try to change sectors.

From your own experience, do you have any pointers or tips when it comes to applying for such jobs?

Sincerely,

Sam (not his/her real name; changed to protect privacy)

Dear Sam,

Thanks so much for your email! I am really glad to hear that you find the blog helpful.

Congratulations on your upcoming transition from the private sector to public interest! Although I’m not a recruiter and only have a little familiarity with the Kenyan legal market, I do have some general pieces of advice to offer based on my own experience. I also invite other readers to share their thoughts in the comment section. I’m sure many members of this community have successfully changed sectors.

First, I think you are completely right that you need to highlight transferable skills. In all your applications, you should clearly demonstrate how the skills, knowledge, contacts, and broader perspective you have gained from the private sector will strengthen your public interest work. Always have specific examples.

Second, look out for jobs where the skills are more easily transferable. If you are a corporate lawyer, perhaps you can consider becoming counsel for a non-governmental organization (NGO). Alternatively, if you have worked in an area (e.g. family law, litigation, employment, conveyancing, etc.) where low-cost or pro bono services are needed, perhaps you can work with an NGO that offers such services or develops resources to assist.

Finally, go ahead and start to do public interest work. You do not necessarily have to work full-time with a public interest organization to have an impact. Also, such organizations will be interested to see that you have a commitment to and some experience in the kind of work they do. Even while in your current role, are there matters you can undertake for individuals or NGOs on a pro bono (or paid) basis? Could you offer to do research as part of a policy initiative? Could you connect with a law school clinic and work with law students on a project in your field? Engaging in this way will probably give you a better idea of the kind of work you would like to do and where your skills might be most useful.

I wish you all the best in the search!
